Multiplication Examples In the World Around You

Look for examples of multiplication in the world around you.

Example: A Box of Eggs

Twelve eggs in a carton arranged in two rows of six, showing 2 times 6 equals 12.

There are 2 rows of 6:

  • you can count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12
  • but it is easier to do 2 × 6 = 12

Arrays (Rows × Columns)

When objects are in neat rows and columns, we call it an array.

rows × columns = total

Example: Tiles

If there are 5 rows of 7 tiles, then there are 5 × 7 = 35 tiles altogether.

What to Do

Sketch the multiplication you find, and show how it is easier to multiply than to count.

Look for things like ice cubes in a tray, chocolates in a box, tiles on a wall, paving stones, and so on.
