# Vinculum

A horizontal line placed over an expression to show that everything below the line is one group.

Example: the horizontal line in the square root symbol that shows which values are part of the square root.

In some countries it is the horizontal line used to separate the numerator and denominator in a fraction, also called a "fraction bar".
