How to Convert US Customary to Metric
Conversion is simply a matter of multiplying by the correct number.
Follow these steps:
- Find the correct conversion number (see Metric - US Customary Conversion Charts)
- Multiply
- If the answer is very large or very small, use a metric prefix, such as 1000 meters ⇒ 1 km or 0.001 meters ⇒ 1 mm

Example: What's 2,000 yards in Metric?
- In the chart it shows that 1 yd = 0.9144 m (meters)
- Multiply 2,000 x 0.9144 = 1828.8 m, or about 1829 m
- 1829 m is better expressed as 1.829 km (kilometers)
Example: What's 50 cubic feet in Metric?
- In the chart it shows that 1 cu foot = 0.02832 m3 (cubic meters)
- Multiply 50 x 0.02832 = 1.416 m3
- Looks Good!
